Romantic Amsterdam

January 14, 2016

The Dutch capital is one of the most fascinating cities in the world, famous for a combination of its uniquely liberal culture, as well its perfectly-conserved heritage, Amsterdam is a city where the classic and the modern lie side-by-side in perfect harmony.

Amsterdam is also a one of the most romantic cities in Europe, with beautiful criss-crossing, canal-lined streets, wonderful architecture and cosy cafés with some of the best people-watching, coffee and delicious desserts in the continent.

Take your partner to Cafe Bleu and enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the city while you dine in Amsterdam’s only restaurant with 2 Michelin Stars. If that’s a bit too rich for your taste, then the adjacent cocktail bar, Twenty-Third, will be just as impressive at a smaller cost. Celebrate your Valentine’s Day at Vyne, one of the city’s only wine-specialist bars, and sample some of the best wine available in Holland.

For an interesting couples’ experience, head to Amsterdam Forest and visit the goat farm, Geitenboerderij De Ridammerhoeve. You can take courses on how to milk a goat and make your own goat’s cheese, or learn how to row, or even just check out the farmer’s market for some tasty treats.

For a more traditional romantic experience, treat your loved one to some flowers from the Bloemenmarkt, or buy them a freshly-cut diamond from Cooster or Gassan after a tour of their polishing and cutting rooms. Alternatively, take a cruise through the city’s canals with your partner and marvel at the sights of the Dutch capital. There are a range of themed mini cruises, including a candlelit dining cruise, a cruise with free pizza and beer, and loads more. If you’re in the city on Valentine’s then the Pancake Boat has a special Valentine’s sailing, with sweet and savoury Dutch pancakes just waiting for your choice of toppings!

If you’re on a shoestring, or you just want something simple to do, then there’s no need to worry, simply rent a tandem bike and take a picnic with you to Vondelpark for a budget romantic experience. There’s no shortage of ways you and your partner can enjoy Valentine’s Day or a romantic spring break in Amsterdam.
