On 18th May 2015, DFDS Seaways celebrated 20 years of their Newcastle-Amsterdam route. Our family joined in with the celebrations aboard KING SEAWAYS and set sail along the North East coast during a special day sailing to commemorate the event.

The weather could not have been more perfect as we set sail past Tynemouth Priory to the backdrop of beautiful blue skies. Celebrations started on the top deck as we enjoyed drinks in the blazing sunshine with other guests.

As we drifted past St Mary’s Lighthouse we were served afternoon tea in the 7 Seas restaurant with warm homemade scones and traditional cucumber sandwiches, finishing with the most wonderful chocolate truffles.

There was lots of entertainment onboard ranging from a Michael Jackson tribute act to balloon modelling and face painting. Our children loved being re-united with Jack the Pirate too.

The definite highlight of our trip was a visit to the Wildlife Centre which is unique to KING SEAWAYS. In association with the whale and dolphin charity ORCA, the room is full of fun crafts, games and information about the wildlife you may spot from the deck. We were joined by wildlife officer Rachel who pointed out the top 20 animals to look out for and provided us with binoculars to check for ourselves. Jack is sure he spotted a whale whilst everyone else was looking the other way!

We thoroughly enjoyed our day sailing and relived some fantastic memories from our Amsterdam Zoo trip earlier this year and created some new ones too! We can’t wait to see what the next 20 years has in store!
