Winter Lights Across Europe

As winter draws in and the days get shorter, it’s no surprise that there are a number of events centred around light and illumination all over Europe. After all, what better use for the dark than as a canvas for amazing light art?

Following on from our hygge blog, we decided to take a look at some of the most spectacular light shows, festivals and more across Europe, including France, Holland, Germany and Poland.

Paris Illuminations

The annual Paris Christmas lights really are a spectacular sight to behold. From November to January a huge number of multi-coloured lights are illuminated with incandescent beauty, allowing Paris to live up to its name as the City of Light!

If you would like to learn more about the illuminations, then you can watch them on Paris Cityvision, which provides commentary in over 10 languages. The evening finishes at either the Moulin Rouge, Lido, Crazy Horse or Paradis Latin!

Amsterdam Light Festival

This year will mark the 5th anniversary of the Dutch capital’s amazing Amsterdam Light Festival. The festival illuminates Amsterdam from 1 December 2016 to the 22 January 2016, allowing Dutch and international artists to display their work in the city centre and over the canals.

A walk around the city will unlock this spectacular collection of artwork, but what better way to see them than from Amsterdam’s famous canals? Water Colors are the renowned canal cruise of choice, as they cover the entirety of the Light Festival. If you are planning to walk it’s recommended to walk the Illuminade route, and keep an eye out for guided tours.

Krakow's Lights

One of the most captivating destinations in Europe, the walled town of Krakow in Poland truly sparkles at Christmastime. Krakow’s illuminations are installed at the beginning of December, including giant luminescent baubles and two huge Christmas trees in front of St. Mary’s Basilica and Wszystkich Swietych Square.

Krakow is a beautiful city to begin with, and is only made even more wonderful with the addition of amazing illuminated sculptures and artwork across the city’s architectural wonders.

Berlin's Markets

With over 60 different markets, Germany’s capital Berlin is one of our favourite destinations when it comes to Christmas lights!

Two of the best traditional German Markets are Weihnachtszauber at the Gendarmenmarkt (21 November – 31 December) and Berliner Weihnachtszeit at Roten Rathaus (21 November – 29 December). However, it’s not simply the markets which create the amazing Christmas atmosphere with lights, another location of beauty are the trees on Berlin’s Under den Linden boulevard which are spectacularly lit up too!

For further information about the Christmas markets in Europe this wintertime why not take a look at our recent blog, dedicated entirely to the amazing markets which can be found across the continent?
