With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we’ve been thinking of some of the most romantic places to visit in Europe all year round and we thought we would share the love!
Situated on the Breton coast, Dinard boasts beautiful beaches, fine dining restaurants and a selection of spa hotels. Mild weather all year round makes it a lovely place for a couples getaway. Known as the ‘Cannes of the north’ it has attracted many famous faces over the years and even has its own film festival every October.
For a great city break, filled with food, culture and history, a visit to Gdansk is a must! Climb the town hall tower to take in the views all the way to the Baltic Sea, then grab a spot of lunch at a traditional Polish ‘milk bar.’ If you feel like treating your other half to a piece of jewellery, Gdansk is famous for its Amber and Mariacka Street which has several shops where you can find some beautiful pieces.
Hamburg is a city filled with unique experiences for a romantic getaway. Relax at Bartholomäus thermal baths, create art together at one of many art workshops in the city or take a romantic stroll by the Alster river. For a different date night, why not activate your senses at a unique restaurant where food is served in a darkened room by blind or partially sighted people? End the night at the planetarium, situated in a former water tower in the middle of a city park, where you can star-gaze all year round.
The fairytale-like location of Lake Bled, is an ideal romantic getaway anytime of the year. In winter the snow-capped mountains surrounding the lake provide a magical backdrop and in spring and summer, you can dip your toes in or take a sunrise swim. Visit the island in the centre on a pletna, a traditional boat, and make a wish at the bell of wishes. Take a carriage ride around the lake or enjoy a candlelit dinner at Bled Castle with stunning views. A stay in this area is not complete without a taste of Bled Cake, a decadent cream cake with many layers of pastry – delicious washed down with some cold champagne – you are on a romantic getaway after all!
The stunning architecture, the grand canals and winding streets make Venice a magical place to visit. Take a gondola ride and explore the city via its famous waterways, enjoy authentic Italian coffee and gelato on St Mark’s Square, and take in the breathtaking views from the top of St Mark’s Campanile. You can even follow in the footsteps of one of the world’s most famous lovers, Casanova, and sip some wine at Do Spade bar near the Rialto Bridge, where he met many of his conquests.
A list of romantic cities wouldn’t be complete without Paris, the city of love. Whether you’re sharing a picnic on the banks of the Seine, taking in the views from the top of the Eiffel Tower, or strolling the streets of Montmartre to the Sacré-Cœur Cathedral, there is so much for lovebirds to explore in the French capital all year round.
The historic Belgian city of Bruges is charming in all seasons. Come with an appetite as the city is famous for its waffles, chocolates and beer – you can even smell the chocolate wafting from the chocolateries as you stroll the cobbled streets. Take a horse and carriage ride around the city, hop on a boat for a canal tour and climb the UNESCO World Heritage Belfry Tower, to take in the views from the top. Quench your thirst when you get down with a pint of their locally brewed beer!
Immerse yourself in the history of the city with a traditional flamenco show held in the heart of Barcelona’s old town, then head to the tapas bars to try local delicacies and drinks. For a day out with a difference take the train to Sant Sadurni d’Anoia and visit some of the many cava producers that are based here. Discover the process behind making the refreshing sparkling wine, visit the vineyards and underground cellars and of course, you must try the cava too! For total wine lovers, you can even stay in a wine-themed hotel back in Barcelona, where you are greeted at check-in with a glass of wine of your choice – what’s not to love?
The Dutch capital is a great place to visit for a romantic getaway. Whether you’re taking a loved-up canal tour through its famous waterways, seeing some world-famous art at their many museums, or watching the sunset from the rooftop of some of the city’s hotels, there are plenty of things to do to keep couples busy. You could even take a day trip to Keukenhof Gardens and marvel at the colourful array of tulips as you stroll through the largest garden in Europe.
Situated between Netherlands and Denmark, these islands comprise of sandy beaches, diverse nature and relaxing spa hotels. Some of the islands have their own languages and are home to some food and drink not available anywhere else. The island of Sylt is famous for its fish restaurants and the island of Texel boasts delicious Dutch beers. Watching the sunrise from the seafront is a romantic experience not to be missed!
