Amsterdam American Cafe

September 18, 2014

After a few hours of trekking around Amsterdam, foot sore & thirsty, it is well worth taking a timeout to people watch and spot stars at Cafe American. This well known meeting place forms part of the famous Amsterdam American hotel, built in 1900 and now a listed monument. Located on the Leidsesquare, it is easily recognisable by the candy striped sun canopies peeking through the trees.

The rich and famous of Amsterdam can sometimes be found in the Art Deco interior, or in the summer the lovely outside terrace offers delicious Dutch specialities. Whether you want to try traditional croquettes, shrimps or fresh oysters, the menu has something for everyone, but be quick – outside tables are always snapped up on a sunny day!

For an extra special treat, the Mata Hari suite at the hotel pays homage to the famous Dutch courtesan, dancer and spy who stayed at the hotel as part of her honeymoon.
