Scenic Summer Road Trips

July 4, 2019

Summer is the best time to hit the road on an adventure of a lifetime. With your sunglasses firmly on, the windows (or even better, the top) down and your favourite playlist playing, the only question is where in the world you’re driving to. Life is about the journey, not the destination, but the best journeys are undoubtedly those with the most interesting destinations. Here are some of the best scenic summer road trips that you can take after catching our ferries to Europe.

Bilbao to Bordeaux

This stunning road trip takes in some of the best views of Northern Spain and Southern France, heading from Bilbao to Bordeaux around the Bay of Biscay. Starting off in the Basque Country, you can visit the iconic Bilbao Guggenheim Museum before heading to San Sebastian on the coast, where surfers and watersports fans can indulge themselves. A drive south through the stunning Pyrenees, ending up in Pamplona, home to the running of the bulls is an option, or you can continue on the coast to Biarritz to hang out in style. The road trip continues up to Bordeaux to visit its historic city centre and sample its world-famous wines. This road trip truly has something for everyone.

Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse

Pronouncing it may be a challenge, but Austria’s Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse (otherwise known as the High Alpine Road) is a road trip that everyone should do in their lifetimes. It’s only an afternoon’s drive, but you can easily include a visit to the delightful Salzburg to relive The Sound of Music or see the birthplace of Mozart. However, the real joy of this Austrian adventure is the chance to live your James Bond fantasy driving through the mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park. With hairpin turns, incredible views and all kinds of landscapes to enjoy, it’s the drive of your life and best enjoyed with blue skies and sunshine. Does it get better than this?

Italy’s Amalfi Coast

Driving in Italy can be its own challenge thanks to the boisterous habits of the locals, but it’s also a place with amazing potential for road trips. This one takes you from Positano to Vietri Sul Mare along the Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO world heritage site that is full of colours and local flavours. Positano’s brightly-coloured buildings make for a vibrant place to start, while Amalfi gives you the chance to see what attracted British high society in the 1920s and 30s. Along the way there are river valleys, beaches and vineyards to explore and some of the best views you’ll ever see from behind the wheel.

Add these road trips to your bucket list and make it a summer to remember.
