Veganuary In Amsterdam

January 14, 2020

Have you made any resolutions this January? While some people are determined to travel more in 2020, others are giving up the alcohol and many are trying to cut down on meat. Veganuary encourages people to reduce their meat and animal product consumption and try vegan alternatives. You may think only eating vegan food may limit you when travelling but it’s simply not the case. There are some fantastic vegan restaurants and cafes across Europe and with DFDS running daily overnight crossings to Amsterdam, we thought we’d focus on some of the best Vegan eateries in the Dutch capital for you to visit in January and beyond.

TerraZen Amsterdam

Located right in the heart of Amsterdam, TerraZen is a vegan restaurant which is a fusion of Caribbean and Japanese cuisine. The Shingen Sushi and Jamaican Curry are well recommended and it is a great spot for lunch in the centre of the city.

Men Impossible

Book ahead to sample the vegan ramen in this restaurant in which the chef cooks, serves and hosts. The menu is simply several different types of hand pulled ramen made fresh to order and a small selection of starters. There is just one large table in the restaurant which seats about 18 (which is why reservations are essential). For freshly cooked, delicious vegan flavours made with passion, a visit to Men Impossible is a must.

Foodhallen

For vegan street food, visit Foodhallen in the Jordaan neighbourhood. Housed in a former bus depot, it now holds several food kiosks serving a range of cuisines, including some fantastic vegan street food options. Fento serves Mexican inspired burritos and nachos and Maza offers vegan dishes with Mediterranean flavours.

Bonboon

For some vegan fine dining, Bonboon won’t disappoint. Offering a set 3 course menu or separate courses, dishes include Thai soup, King oyster mushroom ‘scallops’ and cauliflower with beluga lentils. Desserts include a pumpkin tartelette and a vegan cheese platter. Complemented by a lovely wine list, it’s the perfect place for a date night or to unwind with friends. Make sure you book though as it’s a popular place.

Golden Temple

Named after an Indian temple where thousands of people can get a vegetarian meal for free, Golden Temple serves colourful, healthy dishes including Indian dahl, Iranian quinoa, Indonesian salads and Vietnamese rice paper rolls. It also hosts live music nights, yoga classes and mindfulness workshops.
