Top 10 Spots to Pop a Cork in France

February 7, 2017

When you intend to make a moment special, it helps to have a memorable backdrop. Whether it’s a birthday celebration, a proposal, or any reason to crack open some champagne, France is bursting with stunning locations and romantic spots. So what better place to visit to make a celebration special?

Here are our top ten favourite places to pop a cork in France:

Trocadero, Paris

The Eiffel Tower is pretty unbeatable as a backdrop. It might be more obvious to go up the tower itself, but then you don’t get to see it. Instead, the Esplanade du Trocadero provides the best view of this most iconic of landmarks, especially at night when the tower becomes illuminated.

Sacre-Coeur, Paris

Another stunning spot in France’s capital, the steps and gardens in front of this towering white cathedral provide stunning panoramic views of Paris. It was also made famous by the film Amelie, so is especially good for a moment of grand romance.

Ile de la Cite, Paris

Another elegant spot in Paris for a celebration would be the Square du Vert-Galant, which forms the very tip of the Ile de la Cite. Venture into the park and head along the riverside to the very end. Sit under a willow tree and admire the beauty of the Seine.

Versailles

One of the world’s grandest and most lavish palaces, Versailles is surrounded by incredible gardens and landscaping, providing an amazing location for any special moment. Inside the palace you’ll find the breath-taking Hall of Mirrors, the site of many a royal celebration.

Epernay

If we’re talking about champagne, it seems only fitting to mention its home. Epernay, just south of Reims, is the self-styled capital of the Champagne region, and home to many of the most famous manufacturers. Wander down the elegant Avenue de Champagne and you’ll find Moet et Chandon, Perrier-Jouet, and Pol Roger, to name a few.

Mont Saint-Michel

This fairy tale castle (actually a fairy tale monastery) rises out of the English Channel on a lonely sea mount, cut off from the mainland by the tides. Climbing through its narrow streets to the summit rewards you with a breath-taking view, and the perfect spot for a special moment.

Château de Chambord

The epitome of the French country palace, this château is the largest in the beautiful Loire Valley, and provides a wonderfully romantic setting. Inside you can see the famous stone spiral staircase the rises up in the very centre of the keep.

Wissant

Just along the coast from Calais is the pretty town of Wissant, home to a huge expanse of sandy beach, making it the perfect place for a summer seaside celebration. Interestingly, this is also where Julius Caesar launched his invasion of Britain.

Le Mans

Every June this town hosts the oldest and most prestigious motorsports event in the world, the 24 Heures du Mans. This 24-hour endurance race features plenty of champagne on the winner’s podium, and is a great event to experience for car enthusiasts.

The English Channel

No, we’re not suggesting you row out to the middle of the English Channel, but you can enjoy a celebration onboard a DFDS ferry as you travel to France! Pick up a bottle of fizz in the bar, or head on to the deck and take in a beautiful sunset while you share a special moment with friends or family.
