Mini Guides: While I’m Young’s City Break To Amsterdam

January 19, 2018

City breaks are more popular than ever right now, with travelers spending their time exploring historic sites, sampling delicious food and drink, and soaking up culture. Europe is the perfect place to look for the perfect destination, with so many unique and vibrant cities to explore, many just a stone’s throw away from the UK. Dannielle, of While I’m Young, discovered one of its crown jewels when she took a trip to see what the city has to offer.

Sailing from Newcastle to Amsterdam

Catching the ferry from Newcastle, Danielle first enjoyed a cocktail in the bar before heading to the buffet restaurant for a delicious dinner, then dancing in the nightclub until the early hours. On her journey home from Amsterdam, Danielle also enjoyed the comforts of a Commodore cabin and a juicy
steak in the a la carte restaurant.

Dannielle’s itinerary

Arriving in Amsterdam

  • A short bus ride from the ferry port at IJmuiden to Amsterdam’s Centraal Station.
  • Pancakes, one of the city’s most popular brunch spots, is just around the corner from Centraal Station. A good place to pop in for a pancake before exploring the city.

The canals

  • Amsterdam is famous for its waterways, which were planned out and built in the 17th century, both for defence, sanitation, and transport around the city.
  • They’re perfect for wandering along and seeing the sights, whether on foot or hopping on one of the many boat tours.

Travel tip: You can get a free canal cruise if you buy an Amsterdam City Card at Centraal. The card will also give you free access to most of the city’s museums.

Bloemenmarkt

  • The world’s only floating flower market takes place on Amsterdam’s Singel canal, offering seasonal blooms such as the iconic tulip.

Brunch or an afternoon coffee

  • Vinnie’s Deli on Haarlemmerstraat, a great place for brunch. Dannielle recommends the mushrooms on toast.
  • Stach, also on the trendy Haarlemmerstraat, offers homemade cakes and mouthwatering treats such as peanut butter cups and meringues.

What else to see

Amsterdam is one of the most exciting and unique cities in the world, offering a cosy, laid-back atmosphere alongside incredible history and culture. Here are some of the most essential attractions to add to your list:

  • Anne Frank House – Amsterdam’s most popular museum provides visitors with a fascinating and moving look at the life of a little girl and her family living in constant fear during WW2.
  • Rijksmuseum – One of the world’s finest art collections is housed in this stunning gallery, including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh.
  • Van Gogh Museum – To see the biggest and best collection of Van Gogh, arguably the Netherland’s most famous artist, take a short walk across Museumplein to visit this fantastic museum 3 of 3
  • Royal Palace – Originally the city’s town hall when it was built in 1655, this grand building became a royal residence in the 19th century. It’s full of stunning interiors and artwork, and is still used by Dutch monarchs for ceremonial occasions.
