Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival – The Pumpkin Circus is Coming to Town!

October 26, 2016

Every year the world’s largest pumpkin festival is held within the gardens of Ludwigsburg Palace, Germany, with 500 different species creating the giant sculptures.

With the theme this year being ‘The Pumpkin Circus’, and over 150 tonnes of pumpkins brought in, you can expect to see larger than life displays of tigers jumping through hoops, a white rabbit in a hat and performing ponies, all made from pumpkins!

The festival is running until November 6th, so if you’re heading to Germany it is a great place to target for a fun filled family day out. But there’s more to enjoy than just admiring the pumpkin creations. Try your hand at pumpkin carving, spectate the competitive weigh offs, or join in with pumpkin smashing. There’s even a pumpkin regatta with giant hollowed out pumpkins transformed into canoes racing along the river.

If you’re feeling peckish after a day in the autumn air then the distinct smells of pumpkin and cinnamon filling the air are sure to tempt you across to the food market stalls. With pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, roast pumpkin all on offer, not to mention the lighter snacks of spicy pumpkin seeds something is bound to take your fancy!

Attached to the Palace you can also discover the fairytale gardens, that welcome children of all ages into a world of fantasy and imagination. Exhibits of Germany’s popular fairytales come to life, including the infamous Rapunzel tower. Rapunzel might even let her hair down through the window if you call her name loud enough.

The vast gardens of Ludwigsburg set the stage for the impressive autumn event, but being Germany’s largest baroque palace, there are plenty of other things to do. Take a tour of the gardens, or even inside the palace itself. Ticket prices and tours vary so make sure you purchase the right one. To see the pumpkin displays alone without an additional palace tour prices start from €8.00 for adults and €3.90 for children under 15 years old.

Make the most of the glorious Autumn days before winter creeps in!
