Keukenhof: Holland’s World Famous Spring Gardens

A visit to Keukenhof – dubbed the world’s most beautiful spring gardens – is a truly unforgettable experience. Keukenhof is especially famous for its tulips – a true symbol of Holland. The spring gardens are only open for a short period every year – so make sure you don’t miss out & put these dates in your diary: 20 March to 17 May 2015.

On arrival at Keukenhof you will be overwhelmed by the beautiful perfume coming from over 7 million flowers!

Millions of bulbs are planted every autumn for the following spring’s display. Keukenhof is famous for its tulip displays, but did you know you can also see daffodils, hyacinths, lilies and even orchids in its indoor pavilions? The colourful array of flowers stretch across the park and surround lakes and pathways. Top tip: make sure your camera or phone is charged up – you will want to take a lot of photos.

Each year Keukenhof has a theme and this year is no exception. 2015’s theme is Van Gogh as it is 125 years since this iconic Dutch artist died. To commemorate this Keukenhof has created a mosaic of flowers depicting one of Holland’s most famous and inspirational artists.  The mosaic will measure 250 square metres and is planted using different colours of tulips. Also for art lovers, every year the gardens are filled with sculptures by contemporary artists, something else to discover as you meander through the park. This year over 150 works of art will be on display.

Keukenhof even has its own windmill, climb up it and you will be rewarded with a view across nearby tulip fields – the colours are amazing! The rainbow of colours goes as far as the eyes can see and in Holland’s flat landscape that’s a long way! You can also take a leisurely boat ride through the tulip fields and see them at flower level.

Want to be really Dutch? You can hire a bicycle and ride around the hyacinth and tulip fields.  Local cycle paths ensure it is easy and safe to get around.  For those of you who like a challenge, why not hire a tandem with a friend for an unforgettable cycling experience.

At Keukenhof there are cafes and shops, craft areas and selfie spots – have you ever wanted to have your photo taken in a giant pair of clogs? It’s possible at Keukenhof.  For children, Keukenhof has a maze, a playground, a Miffy house and a petting zoo. A treasure hunt takes them along the most beautiful places in the park. There is plenty to keep the whole family occupied throughout the day – you can really take your time and explore the gardens and indoor pavilions and easily while away a whole day.  If you don’t have that long to spend, you can easily see the highlights in 3 hours, but we definitely recommend a longer visit!
