You won’t have to walk far in Amsterdam to be met with the most beautifully iconic scenes, including the old canal warehouse facades, the twinkling lit up bridges, and the grand ornate architecture that makes up the city skyline. But during the spring and summer months Amsterdam also bursts into life, and we’ve found some of the brightest spots that will no doubt add a touch of colour to your visit.

Dam Square

Dam Square

A place where there’s always something happening, even if it’s just the bustle of the crowds passing through, Dam Square is lined with beautiful tulip baskets surrounding the Royal Palace. There’s often events or celebrations occurring here, a giant ferris wheel offering views over the city, and street performers to surprise visitors.

Bloemenmarkt

You won’t find an explosion of colour in such a small area anywhere else in the city. The Bloemenmarkt is the world’s only floating flower market, and in full bloom you’ll be spoiled for choice among all the tulips.  A wander through admiring all the varieties, with their pretty names is a sure way to brighten your day.

Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum celebrated its fifth birthday this year, and the fountains and gardens that sprawl out behind the fabulous museum seem to be putting in some extra effort this year. Sit for a while and enjoy the beauty of the carefully landscaped gardens, grab an ice cream and step back for the best view of the Museumplein, or even dance among the fountain spouts yourself. This area is sure to put a bright smile on your face.

Vondelpark

A green oasis in the middle of a busy city, Vondelpark is the perfect escape from the crowds. Cycle or stroll through the peaceful natural surroundings, enjoy a refreshing drink at the pavilion open through summer, or take a picnic to enjoy at the foot of the Vondel statue, surrounded by tulips!

Amsterdam Tulip museum

Tulips of course are what gives Amsterdam such a splash of colour, and a visit to the tulip museum will take you back through the history of the tulip in the Netherlands. Aspiring gardeners can purchase bulbs of their own to take a piece of Holland back home with you.

And finally, keep your eyes peeled for the flower lady, who cycles around Amsterdam on this fabulous flower bicycle!
