Christmas Markets of Belgium

December 22, 2015

There are festive markets all over Europe, but some of the most famous are in Belgium. Here are a selection of some of our favourite Belgian Christmas markets, if you hop across to the continent with your car then you could even visit all of them! Whether you’d like a chocolate treat or to experience a traditional Belgian Christmas culture, these three markets are a must-stop to put even the biggest stooge in the Christmas spirit. Give them a go – you’ll be able to pick up unique Christmas presents for friends & family of all ages.

Bruges

Every year, the town centre of Bruges is packed with hundreds and hundreds of market stalls, set out all over its already-charming streets, turning them into fairtyale plazas. Most of the stands sell traditional wooden toys for children, confectionery, gifts, jewellery and more. There is also an outdoor ice-rink, horses and carts and fairground rides for children. All the while, the scent of honey waffle biscuits and other classic Belgian food hangs in the air.

Brussels

The famous Winter Wonders market takes place every Christmas in Brussels and is regularly described as the most original Christmas market in Europe. Living up to Brussels’ reputation as the centre of European politics, the market includes stalls from all over the continent as well as an ice-rink, a big wheel and a sound and light show.

The stalls sell everything from traditional toys and gifts, locally-sourced food, leather work and other handicrafts so you’re sure to find something interesting to take home this Christmas!

Ypres

Located in the city’s beautiful Grote Markt, stalls are decorated as mini Swiss chalets. The market is cosy, with approximately 35 stalls, plus an ice rink, fairground attractions, carol concerts, and seasonal performances. The whole city is also illuminated to create an enchanting and festive atmosphere that will not be forgotten.
